"It really is beautiful here." Michelle let out a contented sigh as she spooned another mouthful of fig and frangipane tart into her mouth. As her lips wrapped around the spoon, delicate tongue chasing the last fragments of pastry, I reminded my body to calm down for what felt like the six hundredth time. "It must have been so much fun making a TV show somewhere like this."

It was beautiful; she wasn't wrong. We had been lucky enough to score a table on the huge wooden deck of The Boathouse, right over the river. The sun had long since set, but we had been treated to the view of the last of the light disappearing into the trees and murky depths.

"It was fun," I said, licking salted caramel and dark chocolate mousse from my own spoon and wondering if my tongue caused Michelle to have any exciting reactions. "Well, kind of fun, anyway. Sometimes it was just long days of the director shouting at us to do it again and again, and my feet would be aching, and I'd wish I was at school like a normal kid."

"That part would have sucked. Especially since acting wasn't really your dream."

"It wasn't. But I only asked my mum if I could quit once. Julia went ballistic, and Mum couldn't stop crying about why I'd want to throw away such a huge opportunity. So, I didn't ask after that."

"Like how Phoenix has learned not to ask for things that might upset his mum," Michelle said quietly, folding her hands under her chin. "Poor kid."

"And Julia's trying to get him into acting, of course," I ventured. "But so far, he's only scored catalogue modelling gigs, and those have dried up now he's getting older."

"He's a cute kid. I can see why kid's clothing brands would snap him up."

"I don't think he likes it much," I said. "And it's awkward for him because he knows that he gets jobs because the mixed-race look is trendy. His agent told him as much. But he doesn't know much about his dad or why he looks like he does, and…" I paused. "It must be hard for him."

"Good thing he's got you in his corner. You could have done with an Uncle Patrick when you were growing up."

"No," I insisted. "I was fine. I didn't go through anything like what he has. I got a bit sick of acting sometimes, but I can't really complain without sounding like an arsehole. 'Oh, woe is me; I starred in a hit TV show and made a ton of money! No one has suffered like I have suffered!'"

Michelle huffed out a breath. "Still, it wasn't what you wanted."

"But now I can do whatever I want."

"Which is definitely a good thing," Michelle said, giving me a little smile. "Sometimes I wish I could just…" She paused. "But work is kind of my whole life."

"You're very committed. You know, with your whole plan to make Partner. I know it means a lot to you.
